25 Years of Commercial Fitness Manufacturing: The Sawgym Story
From a single welding bay in Shandong to a 45,000 m² vertically integrated factory shipping to 53 countries — how Sawgym became a full-line commercial fitness manufacturer.
Sawgym Equipment Ltd. Co. did not start as a global manufacturer. In 2001, in a small industrial zone outside Jinan, Shandong Province, our founders opened a single welding bay building barbells and squat racks for the Chinese domestic market. Twenty-five years later, our machines equip more than 1,200 commercial gyms across 53 countries — and every frame is still cut, welded, powder-coated and assembled under one roof.
The first five years: barbells and squat racks
The early Sawgym line was intentionally narrow — Olympic bars, competition plates, and heavy-duty squat racks. Building only a handful of SKUs forced us to obsess over the fundamentals: steel grade, weld penetration, knurl consistency, sleeve rotation. Those obsessions became institutional. Today the same QC engineers who signed off on our 2005 bars sign off on the 47-point checklist for every plate-loaded machine that leaves the factory.
2010–2015: selectorized and plate-loaded lines
As commercial gyms in Asia scaled through the 2010s, Sawgym expanded into selectorized (pin-loaded weight stack) and plate-loaded iso-lateral machines. We invested in robotic MIG welding cells, CNC tube benders, and a 9-stage powder-coat line — the same automation that global brands relied on, brought in-house rather than outsourced. This is when Sawgym stopped being a workshop and became a factory.
2016–2020: exports, certifications, and Hong Kong HQ
ISO 9001, CE, and EN 957 certifications came in this period, together with the incorporation of Sawgym Equipment Ltd. Co. in Hong Kong as our commercial headquarters. Hong Kong gave us the trade infrastructure — banking, letters of credit, freight forwarders — to export at scale. By 2020 we were shipping DDP containers to Europe, the GCC, North America, and Southeast Asia.
2021–2026: the Dubai distribution hub
The GCC market grew faster than any other region we serve. Vision 2030 wellness spending in Saudi Arabia, hotel wellness build-outs across the UAE and Qatar, and a boom in boutique community gyms across Kuwait and Bahrain pushed us to open a dedicated GCC distribution arm. Sawitt FZCO, based in Dubai Silicon Oasis, now holds spares, cardio consoles, and full container reserves for regional customers — no more 45-day ocean waits for a replacement cable.
The factory today
Our Shandong facility now runs 45,000 m² of production floor across cutting, welding, powder coating, upholstery and final assembly. Every unit carries a 10-year structural frame warranty, and parts stay available for the lifetime of the machine — because we still make them here.
The next 25 years are about the same thing as the first: steel, sweat, and shipping. Talk to our team about equipping your project.
