Selectorized vs Plate-Loaded: A Commercial Buyer's Guide
Pin-loaded weight stacks or iso-lateral plate machines? A practical breakdown of space, member experience, maintenance, and ROI for commercial buyers.
The single most common question we get from a first-time commercial buyer is: should the strength floor be selectorized (pin-loaded weight stacks) or plate-loaded (load with Olympic plates)? The honest answer is almost always both — but the ratio depends on your member base.
Selectorized: pin-loaded weight stacks
Selectorized machines have an enclosed weight stack and a selector pin. Members change the load in seconds without touching a plate. They are the backbone of any 24-hour gym, hotel wellness floor, corporate gym, or beginner-heavy facility.
- Pros: fast load changes, low intimidation for beginners, safer for unsupervised floors, minimal plate storage.
- Cons: fixed movement paths, higher unit cost per station, cables and pulleys are the main maintenance items.
Plate-loaded: iso-lateral machines
Plate-loaded machines use Olympic plates on horns. Iso-lateral versions let each arm work independently, which is why serious strength gyms and university athletic departments prefer them.
- Pros: heavier top-end load, unilateral training, lower per-station cost, mechanically simpler (fewer wear parts).
- Cons: slower load changes, requires plate storage nearby, higher intimidation factor.
Recommended mix by facility type
- 24-hour community gym: 70 % selectorized, 30 % plate-loaded.
- Hotel / wellness floor: 90 % selectorized, 10 % plate-loaded (or none).
- Boutique strength gym: 20 % selectorized, 80 % plate-loaded.
- University / performance: 30 % selectorized, 70 % plate-loaded + racks.
Maintenance and ROI
Plate-loaded machines have fewer wear parts — expect 15+ years of hard commercial use with minimal service beyond upholstery. Selectorized machines need cable replacement every 3–5 years under heavy use. Budget for it up front and neither is a bad investment.
