Designing a 24-Hour Gym: The Sawgym Equipment Checklist

A 24-hour unmanned gym has one design constraint every other facility can ignore: everything has to work without a floor manager. That drives the equipment mix, the layout, and the maintenance schedule. Here is the Sawgym checklist we send to every 24/7 project.

Space per station

• Selectorized machine: 4–5 m²
• Plate-loaded machine: 5–6 m²
• Dumbbell station (bench + rack access): 6–8 m²
• Power rack: 8–10 m²
• Cardio machine: 3–4 m²

Cardio-to-strength ratio

For a typical 400–600 m² 24-hour community gym, plan for a 40/60 cardio-to-strength split. Members book cardio in short peak windows; strength stations get spread across the day. Overbuilding cardio is the most common expensive mistake in this segment.

Dumbbell range

The commercial minimum is 2.5–50 kg in 2.5 kg increments (20 pairs). A serious facility runs 2.5–60 kg (24 pairs). Anything less and you will lose members to the gym down the road. Use a two-tier rack against a load-bearing wall.

Functional zone essentials

• One or two half racks with pull-up bars
• Adjustable benches (3–4 units per 100 members)
• Cable crossover or dual adjustable pulley
• Rubber flooring zone: 30–40 m² minimum
• Kettlebells, medicine balls, plyo boxes

Design details that matter at 3 a.m.

Every 24-hour gym eventually has a solo member at 3 a.m. That single fact drives the design: safety pins on every rack, sled tracks in low-traffic lanes, mirrored walls so members can spot form, cameras with clear sightlines, and — the one most operators forget — a dedicated cleaning-supplies station on every zone.

Maintenance schedule
